Respondus LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor - Virtual Proctoring

Be sure students are using the latest version
There are known issues with older versions of LockDown Browser, so be sure students update to the latest version. See How to update LockDown Browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor are virtual exam integrity tools available for tests given in UNM Learn (provided at no additional charge for students or faculty). LockDown Browser is a custom browser that students install on their own computers that locks down the testing environment within UNM Learn (see compatibility details below). Monitor is a video monitoring tool which uses the student’s webcam and microphone to record their actions and environment during an exam, test or quiz.

When students launch Respondus LockDown Browser to take an exam, they are presented with the UNM Learn login page. They then authenticate, navigate to their course and to the exam as normal, and begin. Depending on the settings you select, students may be required to use a webcam to record themselves during an exam. A "startup sequence" guides them through the requirements you have selected, such as showing identification or making a short video of the exam environment.

When exams have ‘Require Respondus Monitor for this exam’ enabled, the recorded sessions are machine-analyzed for facial detection, motion, and lighting to analyze the student and examination environment. The system also uses data from the computing device (keyboard activity, mouse movements, hardware changes, etc.) to identify patterns and anomalies associated with cheating. Finally, the student's interaction with the exam instrument itself is woven into the analysis, including question-by-question comparisons with other students who took the same exam.

When you review exams, you will see proctoring results ranked according to the risk that exam violations have occurred, providing meaningful results that help you know whether an exam session warrants deeper scrutiny. If desired, you can also can view the data contributing to the result on a video timeline, such as flagged events and key milestones.

  • Respondus LockDown Browser is a free app your students need to download to their laptop or computer.  For computers, the link is institution-specific.  Let students know to use:

Note: The URL is included on the student page, which we recommend you add to your course:  Using Respondus LockDown Browser

There are known issues with older versions of LockDown Browser, so be sure students update to the latest version. See How to update LockDown Browser.

  • Technical Requirements for Students
Note: as of 3/23/2021, your students must have two devices to support Multi-Factor Authentication, e.g., a registered cell phone or access to separate computer to be able to receive the log in authorization code while the desktop on their primary device is locked by Respondus LockDown Browser.
  • Students must have a supported operating system.
  • Students must be able to log into their machines as an administrator:
  • For Windows /PC to install, update, and run LockDown Browser.
  • For Mac to install and update.  LockDown Browser can then be run as any type of user.
  • Additional device requirements/restrictions
  • Respondus LockDown Browser does NOT work on mobile devices, except iPads (This is up to your discretion. IF you choose to enable the setting and allow students to take tests on an iPad, they need to go to the App store to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser.)
  • Respondus LockDown Browser is not available for Chromebooks at UNM.
  • If you require video monitoring, students will need a webcam.
  • Students must have a reliable and stable Internet connection.

  • Per the Provost’s office, you must ask your students as soon as possible whether they can access the equipment necessary to use Respondus. If a student cannot access the equipment necessary to meet the technical requirements for Respondus, you must offer an alternative assessment.

Important Notes:

  • Students must use the LockDown Browser to review test results afterwards.
  • Respondus LockDown Browser is required in order to use Respondus Monitor.
  • Regarding actual test content, LockDown Browser does NOT work with test questions that contain Flash media.
  • Give a practice test.
The Provost’s Office has specifically requested that you give a practice test, e.g., a low-stakes test that your students are required to take. A practice test will give your students the opportunity to install and use the Respondus LockDown browser, see how the process works, test their equipment (e.g., webcam), network connection, etc. prior to taking a high-stakes test. This gives both you and your students time to troubleshoot in advance.
  • How to test video monitoring:  as an instructor, you can download the Respondus LockDown Browser and take the test using the “Student View” in Learn. However, no video record will be generated or uploaded to the Respondus Dashboard Class Results area. To test video monitoring, you can use the practice test you set up in your course and view video results after your students have taken the practice test.

  • Regarding Course Builders - Although Course Assistants in the Course Builder role cannot normally see student test results in Learn, they will have access to results of any tests given using Respondus proctoring tools via the Respondus Dashboard. If you have an assistant in the Course Builder role who should not have access to student data per FERPA, you will need to either request that they be removed from your course or avoid using the Respondus proctoring tools.

The tools are not available in UNM Learn Courses by default.  To use them, you must enable them. (You only need to do this once).

  1.  Open the desired course in UNM Learn.
  2.  From your instructor tools menu at the bottom left, scroll down and click Customization > Tool Availability.
  3.  Put a check in the Available column for "Respondus LockDown Browser."

  4.  Click Submit.

Open the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard.  Note: if you want to walk through the entire process, you will need to have an existing test or create one.

Scroll down to your instructor tool panel (bottom left).  Click Course Tools > Respondus LockDown Browser.   The Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard will open.  Click the Getting Started tab.

IMPORTANT:  You must make the link from section 2 under "Download Instructions" available to your students.  The link is institution-specific: downloading one from the internet will not work.

We strongly recommend the workflow listed on this page.

1. "Watch the Videos."  We encourage you to watch the tutorials to help you understand how the tools work.

2. "Information for your Syllabus and Course Description"
This section has the critical link you must provide to students so they can download the correct version of Respondus LockDown Browser. Each institution has its own link, so make sure students download Respondus LockDown Browser from this link only, and not from an internet search. You will need to add this link to your course.

This area also provides support materials for your students: a video that may be helpful for them to watch, and language you can add somewhere in your syllabus and/or course. It includes important guidelines students will need to successfully complete a Respondus exam.

Note: The language will change based on whether you choose LockDown Browser or also want to add Monitor.

The Practice Quiz

We strongly recommend you create a low-stakes practice quiz that your students are required to take.  This will give them the opportunity to use the Respondus LockDown browser application/see how the process works, test their equipment (e.g. webcam), network connection, etc. prior to taking a high-stakes test. Urge them to use the same computer, location, and network they will use for any future tests in your course.

When you are ready, click Continue to LockDown Browser.

If you are not already looking at your list of Tests in the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard, from the instructor tools menu in your Learn course, go to Course Tools> Respondus.  Scroll to the bottom and click Continue to LockDown Browser.

1. To enable Respondus for a test, click the down arrow to the left of the title, and select “Settings.”

2. To use...
    a. ONLY LockDown Browser, select “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam”
    b. BOTH LockDown Browser and Monitor, select both options
        i. “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam” and
ii. “Require Respondus Monitor for this exam.”

3. Select your settings under either section depending on what tool you selected (LockDown Browser and Monitor).

A few things to note…
  • The "Password to access exam (optional)" password under LockDown Browser Settings> Password Settings should only be used if you plan to allow students to go to a testing center or proctored setting with a third party present that will enter the password.

  • Please review the “explain” links for additional information about each setting.
  • If using Monitor, only select the options in the Startup Sequence that you require. Edit any text you would like to customize.
  • Do not use the Force Completion option in the regular Learn test options for tests using Respondus.
  • As part of enabling the tool(s) Respondus sets its own randomly-generated password.  When you look at your test settings by clicking Edit Test Options you will see it has been filled in and Require password selected; this password is handed off on the back end.  You do not need to do anything with it (i.e., students do not need it), but do not modify it.

4. When finished, click Save + Close.” The Dashboard will load, and you will see “Required” for any tool you selected. You will also notice that it changed the name of your test depending on the tool selected:
       a. “(**WebCam**)” for Monitor, and
       b. “- Requires Respondus LockDown Browser” for the LockDown Browser.

IMPORTANT:  Do not modify your test title after this point or Respondus will not work on your test.

1. Under Course Tools, click “Respondus LockDown Browser”.
2. When the Dashboard opens, click Continue to LockDown Browser.
3. Click the green down arrow to the left of the test you would like to view.
4. Select “Class Results”.
5. A roster of the students in the course is shown, along with the date, time, duration of the test, review priority, and grade (if applicable).
6. Click “[ + ]” next to the student you would like to review.
7. It will show the details of the startup sequence and the exam session in thumbnails below.
8. Click a thumbnail to view the video from the time indicated. Videos can be marked as reviewed or have comments added by the instructor.

When copying a course which used Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor, there are a couple of things you need to do to pair the previous settings with tests in the new course.

Enable the Respondus LockDown Browser tool:
1. Under Course Management, go to Customization > Tool Availability >
2. Put a check to the right of Respondus LockDown Browser.
3. Click Submit.

Pair the old LockDown Browser settings to your new tests:
1. Under Course Management, go to Course Tools.
2. Click to open Respondus LockDown Browser. The dashboard will open.
3. Click the Continue to LockDown Browser button.
4. You will get one of two messages: “Your Settings Have Been Updated!” - Unless you wish to make changes, you do not have to do anything further. Your previous LockDown Browser choices have been saved and applied. On rare occasions you will receive a ‘Fix It’ error. If that is the case, follow the instructions provided.

NOTE - If you copy a course containing Respondus LockDown Browser tests and do not pair the settings students will get this error: "LockDown Browser ( There is a problem with the LockDown Browser settings for this exam.  The instructor needs to use the LockDown Browser 'dashboard' to enable the settings for this exam."
