I lost the course menu

There are three ways to lose the course menu:

  1. If you collapsed the student portion: to expand click the arrow to the left of your course number
  2. If you collapsed the whole menu: if you click the space between the course menu and content area, that will collapse it. Move your cursor way to the left until the cursor changes to a vertical bar - click to expand.
  3. If the entry point to your course has become an external page, such as "How to Use Learn": click the "stack of pages" icon. That will open the course menu in a separate window. From there, scroll to click Customization, then Teaching Style. Change your entry point to a page that is visible in your course menu. Submit, then try to refresh or logout and log back in. Look at Instructor Tips or Course Structure for more on the entry point
How can I move a link in the Course Menu?

In the Edit On mode, move your mouse over the link to expose the up/down arrow to the left of the link. Hold your mouse down on that icon and drag/drop.

Can course content in the Course Menu be opened on day/time release?

You can only hide/show the links in the course menu. To control something by date, add a content area to your course menu; it's like making a blank page. Then add the element you want to control to that page, and edit it to set the Display After/Display Until dates.

Can I change the name of something in the Course Menu?
In the Edit On mode, move your mouse over the link you would like to rename. You will see an arrow on the right which will display the editing options. Select Rename.

Can I hide something that is in the Course Menu?
In the Edit On mode, move your mouse over the link you would like to rename. You will see an arrow on the right which will display the editing options. Select Hide link.

Can I add plain text or a heading to the Course Menu?
Yes, in the Edit On mode, click the plus (+) sign above the Course Menu. From that menu, select Subheader.

How can I change the home page - what students see when they enter?

Go to Course Management ==> Customization ==> Teaching Style and choose the entry point from the menu. Note: to avoid the problem below, it is best to add/ create at least some materials and activities before changing the entry point.    When done, test what the students see with the "Student View" button in the upper right corner.

CAUTION - The default entry point for new course templates at UNM is called the "Course Dashboard."  If you remove or hide that page, the entry point will change to the next visible page. If you have not added anything to the Course Information page, it will be hidden. The next visible page is be "How to Use Learn."  This is an "external" web page and will suddenly cause your course menu to be hidden from you.

What to do if you cannot see the course menu as a result of an external page as entry point:

  1. Click the icon in the upper left corner that looks like a stack of pages
  2. That will bring up the course menu in a separate window
  3. Scroll way down and click Customization, then Teaching Style
  4. Look for the menu to select a different course menu item; if you have no options, you must either add content to an existing hidden page or use the plus (+) sign at the top of the menu to add something that will be visible immediately, even temporarily, such as Announcements or the Calendar. If you choose "Content Area", you will still have to add content to that page.
