Types of Assignments - Web Conferencing

What is it?
Some courses may require live collaboration. This can be especially true for things like remote lectures, class discussions and office hours. Sometimes instructors may count these live sessions towards your course participation grades, so be sure to read the syllabus carefully.  UNM currently uses two tools to support web conferencing:

Zoom can facilitate synchronous online meetings for real-time, interactive classes and office hours. If your instructor plans on using it, you will probably see a "Zoom Meetings" link in the left-hand navigation menu.  Check there for a list of scheduled sessions.

If you want to prepare in advance:

  • Go to the UNM Zoom Participant Guide and follow the directions to download the app and sign in.  Note:  you do NOT need a licensed account, just a basic one.
  • Prior to joining each Zoom session check your computer audio/ video:
Zoom - Check Audio | Check Video
  • Contact UNM Learn Support staff for troubleshooting or questions: 505.277.0857 Toll Free 1.877.688.8817
Or use "Create A Support Ticket" inside your UNM Learn course.

Blackboard Collaborate is integrated with UNM Learn, and can be useful when your teacher wants a secure recording of a webinar for later review or needs class members to share control of a software application. If your instructor plans on using it, you will probably see a "Web Conferences" link in the left-hand navigation menu. (Note: the name of the link may vary--if you do not see it, ask your instructor.) The first time you join a session you will need to download and install a small "Launcher" program.

If you want to prepare in advance:

  • To download the Collaborate Launcher and test your equipment, click the "Web Conferences" link and see if your instructor has created a practice session.  If so, click to enter and follow the online prompts.
  • To download the Launcher and test your equipment outside of UNM Learn, use the Blackboard resources.
  • Immediately after joining a Blackboard Collaborate web-conferencing session:
Collaborate -  Check Audio | Check Video
  • Contact UNM Learn Support staff for troubleshooting or questions: 505.277.0857 Toll Free 1.877.688.8817
Or use "Create A Support Ticket" inside your UNM Learn course.
