Program Overview

The Master of Arts Degree in Education gives you the opportunity to construct your studies around your personal and professional goals toward becoming a transformative, reflective, expert in the field of teaching and learning.

This is an advanced professional development program where teachers develop their own innate leadership skills.

The focus on teacher leadership is designed to develop educational leaders who a) advocate for higher standards of student learning and professional development; b) collaborate with colleagues, students, and the community to create new possibilities; c) affect positive change in school culture; and d) inspire fellow teachers to grow personally and professionally.

NOTE: Obtaining this degree from the UNM College of Education does not guarantee approval for licensure by the State Public Education Department, as additional requirements exist for students seeking New Mexico Administrative Licensure. The University of New Mexico cannot confirm whether this program leads to licensure or advanced certification in your home state. Prior to applying for admission, contact your state board of education to assure that, upon completion of the program, you are qualified to obtain a license or other form of certification. Learning Goals

In your online coursework, you will address critical issues, test new ideas and approaches to learning, and become prepared for participation in a complex and challenging society. The curriculum and strategic course requirements help participants elevate student performance, foster an innovative environment, be effective teacher leaders, and increase community engagement to enhance student learning.

Admissions

Tuition and Fees

Total base tuition cost per credit hour is $428.12. A GPSA fee of $25 is assessed to all Graduate and Dissertation students. There is also a one-time $125 TK20 fee assessed to new COEHS admits. 

student technology fee is charged each semester. It is $150 in the Fall, $150 in the Spring, and $20 in the Summer. There may be additional costs, depending on the class. Additional costs are often for textbooks, supplemental course materials, and proctoring fees.

The degree is offered as a Masters Plan III Option program (coursework only) which consists of 30 total credit hours, including a seminar.

Program Admission Requirements:

  • Meet UNM Graduate Studies requirements;
  • Have achieved a GPA of 3.0 as an undergraduate; and
  • Hold a valid teaching license.
