The Basics

Online courses at UNM are delivered through the university's learning management system, UNM Learn. Online courses are for-credit, academic courses, taught by UNM faculty. They follow traditional start and end dates each semester and are charged academic tuition rates plus an additional online course fee.

The UNM Online Schedule of Classes features all courses offered online at the university. Each course features additional course information including resource requirements.

UNM offers degree completion programs that are available online.

UNM also works to comply with state regulations for the delivery of distance education outside New Mexico borders. Visit the State Authorization page for more information.

Types of Online Courses

There are two types of online courses at UNM.

  1. Synchronous Online - has fixed meeting times. Students log in at a scheduled time, often weekly, to participate in the course.
  2. Asynchronous Online - has no required meeting times. Students log in and participate as their schedule permits.

In both types of online course, UNM faculty have the discretion to require face-to-face meetings, such as for exams or lab work. Detailed course information is available at the UNM Online Schedule of Classes. Students are also encouraged to email questions about course format to professors.

UNM Online is also available to answer questions by email or phone at online@unm.edu, (505) 277-8128 in Albuquerque and toll-free at 1-866-869-6040.

Technologies

Students experience online courses through a learning management system called UNM Learn. There, students access course content and interact with instructors and classmates using a variety of tools such as email, discussion boards, web pages, web conferencing systems, and multimedia technologies.

UNM faculty choose from this array of educational technologies to design a unique course experience. Each online course will feature a variety of styles and tools.

Online courses are not the same as those that students traditionally attend in person. In large part this is due to the technologies involved. It would be wise for everyone interested in online learning to assess their technological comfort level. How Online Courses Work provides great information to help students determine if they are prepared to succeed in an online learning environment.

Commitment

Time: Taking an online course is very different from the traditional classroom environment. A 3-credit hour online course typically requires 6 to 9 hours per week of additional work.

Participation: UNM faculty teaching online expect students to regularly participate in class. Participation requirements do vary by instructor, but students should be prepared to interact.

Equipment and Internet Access: A computer with reliable, high-speed Internet access is a must for online students. Many places offer free high-speed Internet access, including main campus computer pods. Computers must be able to stream audio and video. Most modern devices have a web camera and microphone built in. In some cases, a microphone headset is preferred.

Conduct and Etiquette: UNM's Student Code of Conduct policies apply to all students, regardless of their learning environment. While policy details are available at the link, in general, there is an expectation of professionalism and order.

When synchronous interaction is required, students are advised to attend from a quiet learning environment. During a web conference, for example, the instructor and students are able to hear each other's background sounds. Sounds from televisions, radios, children, pets, and business places are disruptive. Students are expected to contribute to a positive learning environment.
