Bachelor’s Degree-Completion Programs

Very often, situations come along and force you to put your plans on hold — a job, kids, illness, a pandemic, life. No one starts a college degree thinking that they won't finish it. Whether good situations or bad, stuff happens sometimes to change our plans. Before you know it three, four, or more years have passed, and you just don't know how to get back on track and finish your degree. Our degree-completion programs help you to pick up where you left off and get that degree you worked so hard for.

What is Degree Completion?

“Degree-completion” is just what it sounds like; if you started a degree and earned roughly 60 transferrable credits, a degree-completion program offers a flexible, affordable way to finish your bachelor’s. Whether you started working on a degree years ago or you earned an associate degree at a community college or branch campus, you can turn those credits into a bachelor’s degree. Either way, a degree completion program is a great way to get that sought-after diploma.

Former UNM students who have been gone more than a year and have earned at least 90 credit hours may qualify for the Graduation Project, a program designed to help former Lobos by providing specialized resources and support for those looking to return to UNM. To see if you might qualify, visit the Graduation Project’s website.

You can complete your degree from home on the days and times that work for you! Coursework is fully online and, with very few exceptions, have no virtual class meeting times.

What Kind of Majors Can I Do Online?

While you may not be able to complete the major you originally sought, there are plenty of degree-completion programs to choose from. See the different programs we offer above; click on the image to get more information. Note that admission to the Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Radiologic sciences degrees require that you are already either licensed or certified in those fields.

What are Accelerated Online Programs?

UNM’s Accelerated Online Programs (AOPs) are designed to help busy, working adults like you achieve your academic goals. Although the pace is fast and rigorous, accelerated online courses are flexible — and most are Asynchronous — allowing you to pick the best places and times to study. Courses are online, on 8-week cycles, and have multiple start dates throughout the year.

These courses are designed at UNM to fit specific course quality requirements. They use the same robust curricula as their classroom counterparts. Courses are never taught by third-party instructors, and you can expect diverse interactions with classmates and faculty. Each course goes through a rigorous quality review process.

Some AOP courses now utilize Open Education Resources (OER) to ensure that students have access to free or very low-cost course materials including textbooks, videos, and instructional tools. In Fall 2023, UNM was selected as one of the recipients of the federal Open Textbook Grant for nearly $2.125 million and is in the process of creating the New Mexico Open Educational Resources (NMOER) Consortium to help faculty across the state adopt OER into their courses.

Another Way to Pay

With the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, NM residents working on their first bachelor’s degree who meet other eligibility requirements can expect to have tuition and fees covered by the state — yet one more reason to come back to finish.

For degrees offered in an Accelerated Online Program format, students from outside New Mexico can expect to pay the same affordable tuition rate as in-state residents and may also be eligible for non-resident transfer scholarships.
