Accelerated Online Programs Explained
September 1, 2026 - Staff
Going back to school looks different for everyone. Maybe you've been working full time for years and are ready to finish the degree you started. Maybe you're looking for a graduate program that can help you take the next step in your career. Or maybe you've simply reached a point where earning a degree feels more important than ever, but you're wondering how you'll make it work with everything else on your plate.
If any of this sounds like you, UNM's Accelerated Online Programs (AOPs) are designed to help.
Online learning has made earning a degree more accessible, but not all programs offer the same level of flexibility. Some require you to attend classes at set times, while others follow a fixed schedule with a group of students.
UNM's Accelerated Online Programs are designed to fit a busy life. Most courses last eight weeks and are asynchronous, so you can complete your coursework when it works best for you. You'll still have weekly deadlines, connect with instructors and classmates, and meet the same academic standards as any other UNM course. The difference is that you choose when and where you learn. Whether you're returning to college or pursuing a graduate degree, AOPs are built for busy adults.
"An AOP is a powerful, flexible pathway for busy working adults who are ready to move their education forward," said Dawn Davis, Associate Director of UNM Online.
If you've already completed some college courses and want to finish your bachelor's degree, UNM's bachelor's AOPs can help you pick up where you left off. Maybe work, family, or other responsibilities interrupted your education. An AOP makes it possible to continue toward your degree.
If you're considering graduate school, UNM's fully online graduate AOPs offer a flexible way to advance in your career, build new skills, or even change professions, without putting your life on hold.
Flexible Doesn't Mean Easy—It Means It Fits Your Life
What makes an AOP stand out from other online programs is its flexibility.
"AOP courses are predominantly short and asynchronous giving learners exceptional flexibility and focus," Dawn added. "Because students choose where and when to engage with their coursework, they’re able to fit school into their lives – not the other way around."
That flexibility can make a meaningful difference when you're balancing work, family, military service, or other commitments. Instead of rearranging your life around a class schedule, you decide when to complete your coursework.
Keep in mind that accelerated doesn't mean self-paced. Most AOP courses are eight weeks long, so they move quickly and require you to stay engaged. You'll have regular deadlines, interact with instructors and classmates, and actively participate throughout the course.
"The accelerated format is rigorous," Dawn said. "The most successful learners stay on track by minimizing distractions and concentrating on one, or sometimes two, courses at a time."
For many students, this focused approach makes school more manageable. Rather than juggling four or five classes at once, you can concentrate on one or two and continue making steady progress toward your degree.
A Program That Works With Real Life
Life doesn't always follow a semester schedule. A new job, military service, family responsibilities, or unexpected events can change your plans.
AOPs are designed with that reality in mind. Courses run on a consistent eight-week schedule, making it easier for you and your advisor to map out your path to graduation. And if you need to take a break, you don't have to start over.
"If life requires taking a break, that's okay," Dawn said. "Students can jump back in the next time the course comes around, making it so much easier to stay on track and keep the momentum going."
If you do need to step away, your academic advisor can explain how it may affect your graduation timeline, financial aid, or future coursework. They'll also help you plan your return when you're ready.
The Same UNM Degree, Online
Choosing an online program doesn't mean sacrificing quality. "Online programs from New Mexico’s premier research institution carries the same prestige and rigor as any other UNM degree," Dawn explained.
With an AOP, you'll learn from the same faculty, complete the same coursework, and meet the same academic standards as on-campus students. Your transcript won't indicate whether you took classes online or in person.
Courses also follow proven quality standards to create an engaging learning experience, with thoughtful course design, digital accessibility, and opportunities to interact with instructors.
"What does differ is the flexibility that online access provides," Dawn said. "Less commuting means more time to be productive, stay focused and make steady progress."
Making a UNM Degree More Affordable
Cost is often a major consideration, especially if you live outside New Mexico.
With Accelerated Online Programs, everyone pays the same base tuition per credit hour, regardless of residency. So, there’s no higher out-of-state tuition, making a UNM degree more affordable for students across the country.
"This is a major financial advantage for Lobos who do not have New Mexico residency status," Dawn said. "The result is significant savings that make earning a UNM degree a great option, no matter where our Lobos live."
UNM has changed how students access course materials, offering three flexible tiers: Complete, Select, and Opt-Out. The complete option is a flat rate of $279 per semester and offers the most cost-savings and flexibility. The Select option allows students to purchase specific materials, and the Opt-Out option is for students who would rather purchase course materials on their own.
Many AOP courses also use Open Educational Resources (OER), which are free digital learning materials that replace traditional textbooks.
"The availability of OER in a course means students have access to high-quality learning materials from day one and at no additional cost," Dawn said.
Depending on your situation, you may not need to purchase textbooks, allowing you to begin learning right away without extra expenses.
You Don't Have to Put Your Life on Hold
If you've ever thought, "I'd love to go back to school, but I'm just too busy," you're not alone.
Dawn understands that concern. That's exactly why these programs exist.
"The benefit of the online modality cannot be overstated," she said. "For those who want a UNM degree but, for any number of reasons, cannot come to campus, the online modality opens the door to life-changing educational opportunity."
Earning a degree still requires commitment, consistency, and good time management. But having the flexibility to fit school into your life can make that goal feel much more attainable.
"Pursuing an AOP is not easy," Dawn said. "It takes grit, determination and heart. But imagine the sense of accomplishment—and the opportunities waiting on the other side."
Support Every Step of the Way
Even though you'll be learning online, you won't be doing it alone. As you explore programs, the UNM Online team is available to answer your questions, explain admission requirements, and help you find the program that best fits your goals. Once you're admitted, you'll work with an academic advisor who can review your transfer credits, create your degree plan, and help you stay on track toward graduation.
You'll also have access to tutoring through the Center for Teaching and Learning, writing support, library resources, accessibility services, and other tools designed to help you succeed in an online learning environment.
"We understand that choosing an online degree is a meaningful decision with many factors to consider, and we're here to support learners throughout the decision-making process," Dawn said. "Our team brings deep experience in online teaching and first-hand knowledge of the accelerated online learning journey."
