The University of New Mexico is classified as a Military Friendly School and Online Education at UNM presents a valuable opportunity for Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel to pursue and finish their degrees. Veterans need to be aware of guidelines to ensure their educational success and maintain eligibility for benefits.

  • Veterans accessing their benefits must have their class schedule approved by a certifying official at the campus Veterans' & Military Resource Center. Any schedule changes during the term should be discussed with your certifying official.
  • Online courses are a great tool for balancing coursework and personal commitments. However, a 100% online schedule will impact your housing allowance benefit. Please contact the V&MRC for clarification.

Active Duty Military

Military Tuition Assistance is a source of Financial Aid for Active Duty Military (ADM) personnel. ADM personnel work with his/her duty station's Education Officer regarding access to Military Tuition Assistance. Then the Veteran & Military Resource Center can assist you in meeting your academic goals, including information about admission, registration, and degree plans. The V&MRC serves as the Military Liaison for the Air Force and assists with all branches of the U.S. Military.

Federal Tuition Assistance (TA)

Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. For more information, visit the UNM Financial Aid Office's Federal Tuition Assistance webpage.

Veteran and Military Student Complaint Process

Military members and their families have special considerations when it comes to higher education. UNM takes those considerations and any arising concerns seriously. In addition to UNM's complaint process, the Department of Defense ensures complaint resolution for various areas of concern, depending on the scholarship or aid program in which you participate. Please see the Military.com website for complete details if you are a military student or family member with a complaint.
