How Online Courses Work
Overview
Online courses at UNM are delivered through the university’s learning management system, UNM Learn. Online courses are for-credit, academic courses, taught by UNM faculty. They follow traditional semester start and end dates and are charged academic tuition rates plus an additional online course fee.
Commitment
UNM students are expected to spend about two hours of study time per credit hour enrolled. They are also expected to participate in class, keep up with coursework, keep track of assignments and due dates, connect with instructors, and interact with classmates. Self-direction, time management, and a dedicated study space are highly recommended. UNM’s Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) offers additional study strategies.
Participation
Interaction with your instructor and classmates is critical for class participation and when you have questions. UNM Learn has resources to help you become oriented with the system. Visit learn.unm.edu and browse the student resource links at the bottom of the page.
Equipment
To ensure the best possible learning experience, owning or having reliable access to a modern personal computer with virus protection is recommended. A fast, reliable Internet connection is also required. Visit UNM Online Requirements to find fundamentals on getting oriented and the technology requirements for using UNM Learn.
Each online course at UNM may have additional resource requirements, such as software, a web camera, or a microphone headset. Be sure to review specific requirements before starting any online course by visiting the Online Class Schedule and clicking on the course title to view the course details.
Resources
UNM students enrolled in an online course benefit from traditional on-campus support resources that are also available within the UNM Learn environment. Embedded resources include Ask a Librarian and CAPS tutoring. Each online course also offers an orientation to help students navigate UNM Learn and become acquainted with the course.
